What Should You Remove Before Uploading A PDF To AI?
Remove personal information that the task does not need. Review names, emails, phone numbers, addresses, account identifiers, signatures and information visible inside images. Keep a separate original and share only a reviewed copy.
Witalias helps you replace selected names with consistent aliases and redact selected details locally in your browser. It supports English text-based PDFs up to 20 MB and 50 pages. It does not upload your document to Witalias or an AI service.
Your Pre-Upload Privacy Checklist
Work backwards from the question you want the AI assistant to answer. A request to summarise payment terms usually does not need a person’s email, bank account or home address.
- People and organisations: decide whether names are necessary or whether Person A and Company A preserve enough meaning.
- Contact details: check headers, footers, signature blocks and repeated email addresses or phone numbers.
- Financial identifiers: remove bank accounts, customer references and identifiers unrelated to the task.
- Images and indirect clues: look for faces, signatures, embedded screenshots, rare events and combinations of facts.
- Final copy: review every page and download the protected output. Never attach the original by mistake.
What A PDF Privacy Tool Cannot Decide For You
Removing direct identifiers does not guarantee anonymity. Job titles, dates, locations and unusual events can identify a person when combined. Witalias does not decide whether you have permission or a legal basis to share a document.
Automatic suggestions can miss private details. Scans, editable Word files, encrypted documents, forms and signed PDFs are outside the supported workflow. Images and image-internal metadata need separate care.
